Wild Flowers

While loosely following on from his two previous series – Xenia and Chiaroscuro - in its clear reverence for the still lives of the Dutch Golden Age, the emphasis underpinning Wild Flowers is rather more anchored in Protheros’s own locality – Devon in the west of England - and a campaign of gentle protest against modern farming techniques. He collaborated with a group intent on rewilding meadows of wildflowers in areas with a low species count, using traditional cyclical and regenerative techniques of seed collection, land preparation and planting, through to harvesting solely with the scythe. Shot towards the end of summer, he even utilised vessels made by this collective, who included amongst their number creatives and makers across a variety of disciplines.

Xenia

Xenia (ξενία) is an ancient Greek concept that translates to "hospitality," "guest-friendship," or "ritualized friendship". It signifies a reciprocal relationship between host and guest, rooted in generosity, gift-giving, and mutual respect. It was considered a fundamental value in ancient Greek society and a moral obligation, as well as a political imperative.
